Described as a 'musical journey through the history and future of Chicago music' The Chicago LP has often been referred to as 'The Dance Album of our Time'. The concept behind the limited edition, double-disc CD (which has a companion DVD by the same name) was conceived by the co-founders of S&S Records; Steve "Silk" Hurley and Shannon "DJ Skip" Syas (both of whom are Executive Producers for the project).
"The CD and DVD was basically a labor of love for us," says Hurley, Executive Producer and co-founder of S&S Records. "Everyone knows that all the great legends of house and dance music got their start here in Chicago but none of them had ever collaborated on a project of this magnitude. Skip and I thought we would push the envelope and be the first to get everyone together."
"Peace Pipe" features the richly voiced R&B artist Syleena Johnson and is a cover of the house music classic by the same name. "It's my favorite house song," she says. "I use it to open my shows and when Steve and Skip approached me about the opportunity to cover it on the Chicago's Finest CD, I jumped at the chance." As did Malik Yusef, whose song "Wouldn't you like to Ride" features Chicago natives Common, Kanye West and JV. "Steve got at me about possibly remixing the track and I couldn't say no. I had to do this one for Chicago". Along with Johnson, Yusef, Common and West, other Chicago natives featured are DJ Wayne Williams, Marshall Jefferson, Roy Davis Jr., DJ Pierre, DJ Kelly G, Mr. K.Alexi, Terry Hunter, CZR, DJ Slugo and Fast Eddie.
Syas is grateful the project has received accolades throughout the house and dance music communities. "We've been getting a tremendous response from everyone," he says. "Especially Recording Academy members. Normally during GRAMMY® voting people tend to overlook the dance categories because they expect it to be electronic dance songs or albums, but S&S is changing the scope of the dance categories by submitting sophisticated, soulful pieces that represent true house and dance music. We really want Academy members to understand what an incredibly ground breaking project this is. We've got the CD featuring some of the biggest names in house and the DVD that gives you a deeper look into the lives of DJs and producers like Paul Johnson, Ron Carroll, Bad Boy Bill and Mike Dunn."
